By the end of this chapter, you will know how to
  • Choose a market, a timeframe and a layout
  • Add order-flow indicators and know what they show
  • Draw with the drawing tools, their shortcuts, styles and conditions
  • Import your themes and drawing templates from TradingView

Choose a market

Laboratory > Chart. To change asset, just type a letter: the search opens. To change timeframe, type a digit, then Enter to confirm or Esc to cancel.

Crypto, Stocks, Forex, Indices
The main asset families, filterable in the search.
CME
Futures contracts: S&P 500 (ES, MES), Nasdaq 100 (NQ, MNQ), Dow Jones (YM), Russell 2000 (RTY), crude oil (CL), gold (GC) and currency futures.
Aggregated
Unified mode combines Binance, Bybit and OKX into a single book: volume and flow from three venues on the same candle. One click goes back to a single exchange.
Spot and futures
For crypto, the cash market or perpetuals. On perpetuals, the funding rate shows venue by venue, with its annualised value.

Five layouts: Single view, Two side by side, Two stacked, Three panels, Four panels. Each panel keeps its own asset and timeframe.

Indicators

The Indicators button opens the list, sorted into four families, with your favourites first:

FamilyIndicators
PriceVWAP, MA/EMA, Bollinger, RSI, MACD
VolumeVolume, Delta Volume, Trade Counter, CVD, CVD par taille (CVD by trade size), Volume Profile, TPO / Market Profile, Volume Bubbles
OrdersFootprint, Pression (pressure), DOM, Tape, OB Heatmap, Open Interest, Liquidations, NL/NS, Ecart entre places (cross-venue spread), GEX Heatmap, Niveaux gamma (gamma levels)
ContextEconomic News, Historique des positions (position history)
Footprint
Each candle opened into buy and sell volume per price level. On some markets no history exists: only the candles formed since the chart opened are built, and the screen says so.
Delta, CVD
Difference between buy and sell volume, per candle (delta) or cumulated (CVD). CVD par taille separates small orders from large ones.
Volume Profile, TPO
Volume traded, or time spent, at each price level.
DOM
The live order book next to the price, with Recenter. Desktop application only.
OB Heatmap
The order-book history as a heatmap: where liquidity sat, and when it disappeared.
GEX Heatmap, Niveaux gamma
Market makers' gamma exposure on options, and its key levels, drawn on the price. See the economic terminal.
Economic News
Economic releases placed on the time axis.
Historique des positions
Your own trades, entries and exits, on the chart where you took them.

Optimise an indicator

An indicator's Optimize button tests its settings on the history of the asset shown. Choose an approach (rejection, continuation after a break, attraction, reversal from a zone, momentum, signal cross), the target and invalidation as ATR multiples, and the horizon in candles.

Settings are ranked on the first 70% of the history, then checked on the next 30%, which is never used for ranking. Success counts signals that reach the target before the invalidation: chance gives about 50%. The score keeps a cautious lower bound of it, which penalises settings with few signals. Apply sets the chosen setting on the indicator.

Drawing tools

71 tools, sorted into seven groups: lines, shapes and channels, Fibonacci and Gann, positions and measures, patterns, annotations, and more tools (volume profile over a range, anchored VWAP, cycles…).

  • Magnet: one click for the weak magnet (snaps to nearby OHLC), a second for the strong magnet (always on the nearest OHLC), a third to turn it off.
  • Stay in drawing mode: draw several times with the same tool without picking it again.
  • Favourites bar: the starred tools, in a floating bar you place wherever you like.
  • Objects: the list of the symbol's drawings, to hide, lock or delete them.

Tool shortcuts

Each tool can carry a shortcut: Alt plus a letter or a digit, with Shift if needed. The most common tools have one by default; Set a shortcut changes a tool's shortcut. The full list is in the appendix.

Drawing styles

A drawing's settings are split into four tabs: Style, Text, Coordinates, Visibility. A good style is saved as a template (Save drawing template as…), set as the tool's default, and reapplied in one click. Kara also remembers the last style used for each tool.

Conditions on a drawing

A drawing can react to price. In its conditions, choose a trigger: touch, cross, above, below, close above, close below, retest, after N candles, or at a date. Combine several criteria with All (AND) or Any (OR), then choose the effect:

Change style
A zone that turns red once broken. Reversible makes the style follow the live state instead of freezing.
Stop extension
The drawing freezes into a historical segment at the trigger candle. Nothing is deleted.
Notification
An alert when the condition is met, see Alerts and notifications.

Chart styles

The Styles button saves the whole chart configuration (indicators and settings) under a name, in folders. The Community tab shows styles published by other users, by popularity or by date: Import adds them to yours. Share one of your styles with Publish to community.

On a tuned indicator, Add to a style saves only its parameters into one or several existing styles, without touching the rest.

Import your TradingView settings

Styles > Connect TradingView brings in your colour themes, your drawing templates and your favourite tools.

  1. 1
    Prepare your colours in TradingView.

On your chart: right-click > Colours > Save theme. For drawing templates, select a tool, then Template > Save template.

  2. 2
Open the browser console on tradingview.com.

Signed in, on a chart, press F12 (or Ctrl + Shift + I) and open the Console tab. Show your favourite tools bar: that is how your pinned tools are retrieved.

  3. 3
Copy the script from Kara, paste it into the console and press Enter.

The kara-tradingview.json file downloads. In Chrome, if pasting is blocked, type allow pasting then Enter before pasting.

  4. 4
    Drop the file into Kara.

Choose the themes to import, the drawing templates (each becomes the default style of the matching tool) and the favourites, then Import selection.

Capture and share

The capture button copies the chart image to the clipboard, downloads it as PNG, or opens your system's share sheet.

Trade from the chart

The chart's order ticket places a Limit order or a Market order: choose the account, the price, the take-profit, the stop-loss and the risk in percent, then Confirm order. On a long or short position drawing, Take the trade reuses the entry, stop and target you drew.

Right-clicking a price level also offers to create an alert. Execution is covered in Trading terminal, alerts in Alerts and notifications.
